The Ornish Diet is a low fat, all-vegetarian diet plan. Combining the nutrition plan, exercise, and stress-management techniques of this diet results in weight loss and improved health for most people. Although this diet plan takes more dedication than a lot of other diets, and often requires major lifestyle changes for the dieter, research shows that it is effective for both losing weight and helping to reverse heart disease. With its emphasis on stress-management and making healthy food choices, this diet is also a perfect candidate for combined use with weight loss hypnotherapy.

The Ornish diet comes in two very similar types, a Reversal diet and a Preventative diet. The Preventative diet is excellent for people who wish to shed pounds and lower their chance of developing heart disease. It is also appropriate for people wanting to reduce their cholesterol levels. The Reversal diet is formulated for people already suffering from heart disease who are looking to reverse the symptoms of the disease and cut their risk of having heart attacks.

Both forms of the Ornish plan recommend a nutritional approach that is made up of 10% fat, 20% protein, and 70% complex carbohydrates. Under the diet, all meat, fish, and poultry are avoided. All nuts, seeds, fats, and oils are also not allowed. Refined carbohydrate foods such as white flour and white rice are also banned, but whole grain bread and pasta, beans, and legumes are fine.

Foods allowed in limited amounts include egg whites and fat free dairy products such as lowfat milk, cheese, and yogurt. Most processed foods are not allowed, since any processed foods with more than 2 grams of fat per serving are not allowed.

The diet allows you to eat vegetables, beans, fruit, and whole grains at every meal until you feel full. The good thing about this diet program is that since you are allowed to consume as much as you want of permitted foods, you can feel full and satisfied all the time. This diet program, unlike many others, is not based on unsafe "starvation" techniques.

Combined with the diet plan, another key aspect of the Ornish plan is stress-management. There are numerous stress-relieving practices you can use, such as meditation, yoga, and hypnosis. Hypnosis is ideal for reducing anxiety and tension while promoting natural weight loss. Hypnotherapy techniques work by guiding your unconscious mind to having positive thoughts instead of negative thoughts when you start to get anxious. These techniques are quite effective in promoting relaxation.

While the Ornish diet is healthy and works for most people, it can be challenging to follow because it involves many restrictions. This diet and others like it often fail because people are unable to stick to them. Many people struggle with dieting because they suffer from an uncontrollable appetite, uncontrollable food cravings, compulsive overeating, or a lack of motivation to lose weight. These obstacles keep many hard-working dieters from maintaining their diet and achieving permanent weight loss. Hypnosis therapy helps you beat these obstacles, and is an excellent complement to the Ornish diet plan because it provides powerful motivation to stay on a weight loss plan.

Hypnosis works to control the appetite by "reprogramming" the unconscious mind to eliminate and replace bad habits with good ones. A lifetime of unhealthy eating habits such as "emotional eating" can cause people to eat compulsively, even when they are not truly hungry. Hypnosis breaks unhealthy associations with food and our feelings to end this conditioned response and prevent emotional eating. Hypnosis can further influence dieting success by replacing the overeating response with another activity, such as exercise. This way, instead of getting urges to overeat, you will feel motivated to engage in healthy physical activity.

Hypnotherapy can also be used to eliminate the emotional anxieties that keep you from losing weight. For many people, being overweight provides a "secondary gain" in the form of a sense of emotional protection or safety. For example, many people with low self-esteem have a fear of rejection, so they use their weight as a reason to assume others will dislike them. Through hypnosis, we can think more positively and focus on improving our health instead of feeling overwhelmed by such anxieties. We can use hypnotic therapies to boost our self-esteem, placing value on ourselves and our own health.

Hypnotherapy offers a strong, natural combination of stress-management, motivation, and behavior modification to encourage weight loss and help you follow your preferred diet plan. Using hypnotherapy with the Ornish diet is particularly effective, but hypnotherapy is ideal for helping people stay on any weight loss plan. Hypnosis promotes the success of weight loss programs along with natural weight loss so people can enjoy long-lasting results.
